Guided by flashlight through the Merchant House Museum, the Family’s presence was known through story and the environment of the home itself.  A staircase creak, embellished door frames, wooden floors enkindled Sy Auerbach’s imagination, leading to the writing and the completion of the first painting of Flame Series upon her return.

On Halloween 2013, Melissa Schaeffer and Sy Auerbach took the A train from the West Village to the Cloisters. Surrounded by foliage, the colors of fire, we walked into the museum to the sounds of Janet Cardiff’s Forty Part Motet. Being engulfed in sound from the myriad speakers encircling us, we listened to the separate layers of voices from each designated speaker.

In September 2015, John C. Morris and Melissa Schaeffer traveled to NYC to visit museums — the opening of the new Whitney, Brooklyn Museum, Isamu Noguchi Museum, Yoko Ono’s one-woman show at MoMA, and the Leslie + Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art (and the Lesbian Herstory Archives, which unfortunately was closed – another time!) — and old friends.
